With the world’s eyes on Rio and all the buzz around the athletes, there’s lots to talk about around the proverbial water cooler. There’s also a risk that employee engagement can decrease even more beyond the current 32% resulting in lost productivity. What to do?
Think like Michael Phelps.
Despite his initial fear of putting his head under water at age 7, MIchael was determined to be able to swim like his two older sisters, so he began floating. This is how he mastered the back stroke as a child (doesn’t everyone?) The rest is legendary history and he is now the most decorated Olympian of all time. He is living proof of what I talk about in my motivational speeches: fear is what you pass on the way to success.
POINT: When you apply determination + focus, stuff happens. The trick is to maintain the motivation that fuels self discipline and maximizes engagement to work at peak performance level. What motivates you? Is it money, peer recognition, job satisfaction, people? Whatever it is, post a picture of it on your computer as a reminder why you’re doing what you’re doing. List three things you love about your organization and keep it visible.
Being a productive, engaged team worker won’t get you a gold medal, but it WILL get your boss’s attention and MAY get you a raise, a promotion or ……cake by the ocean 🙂
And you don’t even have to get your toes wet…
